The desktop commons: bringing e-journal and e-resource archiving to the desktop

This presentation will demonstrate a proof-of-concept implementation of a Smart Client application (easily deployed, supports both online and offline operation and uses a blend of local and web-based resources) for digital archiving of e-journal subscriptions held by special libraries. The particular focus will be implementation of software for e-journal archiving that is ross-platform, light-weight (that is, can easily be installed on most desktop systems) and uses a balance of local and networked resources. An initial survey of 164 special libraries indicates that many libraries already encounter loss of subscription coverage from a range of causes, and that very few have an e-journal archiving strategy. Research outcomes indicate that a cross-platform "Smart Client" approach to e-journal archiving is achievable from a technical point of view but faces challenges in relation to  copyright.

                Discussion

10.30 am   Morning Tea

11.00 am  Mr. Ian McDonald, Senior Legal Officer, Australian  Copyright Council

Beyond the copyright comfort zone: contracts, social networking sites and new technologies for parliamentary librarians.

This presentation will cover the inter-relationship of copyright and contract in the context of data access and on-line subscription sites, together with how parliamentary libraries might manage copyright issues raised by the use of social media sites such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. It will also explore how section 200AB may apply to supplement section 48A of the Copyright Act.

12.15 pm   Dr Edmund Balnaves

                 Survey of Electronic Resources

This presentation will review the good, bad and ugly trends in online  electronic resources. The electronic resource environment is in a state of dynamic change. With Web 2.0, the open source and open access movements, new search engines on the one hand, and the opening of established database services to pay-per-view access on the other, we are seeing a transformation of access to electronic resources. The wealthiest universities command an armoury of online resources that form part of  their educational “capital”. However rich resources are increasingly within the reach of special libraries, and are discoverable through new “Search 2.0” gateways.
